This is what I wished would happen, but like so many of my wishes it failed to come true. I recently read, and loved, Atwood's "The Penelopiad: The Myth of Penelope and Odysseus". The Penelopiad is Atwood's retelling of the myth of Odysseus (of The Odyssey) from the perspective of Penelope, Odysseus' wife, who waited at home for him for almost 20 years. This is the fourth book in the Canongate Myths Series that I've read, and incidentally, my first Margaret Atwood. Some, like Ali Smith, have rewritten a myth in modern language and placed the action in the present. The all-female cast is attempting to bring to the stage an adaptation of the Greek myth of Penelope, wife of Odysseus, as retold by Margaret Atwood in her 2005 novel, The Penelopiad. Others, like Su Tong, Margaret Atwood mixes both of these methods together as she rewrites the tale of Odysseus from the viewpoint of his wife Penelope in 'The Penelopiad'. I liked the subversive After Atwood's The Penelopiad, I'm reading Jeanette Winterson's Weight and Karen Armstrong's A Short History of Myth, another title in the Canongate Myth series. It's the period of time covered by the Iliad and Odyssey, but told from Penelope's point of view. Now that I'm dead I know everything.
